Peace – Poem by Rupert Brooke
Now, God be thanked Who has watched us with His hour,
And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping,
With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power,
To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping,
Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary,
Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move,
And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary,
And all the little emptiness of love!
Don’t keep thinking about the bad things that happen in your life. Remember to write in your gratitude journal every day. If you don’t want to journal then before you go to sleep think about 3 – 5 good things before you drift off. This will help you get rid of a lot of the negative stuff floating around in your head and help you sleep better. I know there are many times especially when you are newly disabled when it is difficult to think of anything good, so here are a couple of things to help get you started: a bed to sleep in, food to eat, clothes to wear, family, pets (if you have them), your health (I’m thankful for the sight I still have) etc. So you see there are many things you can be thankful for and when you live in this zone then you will find much peace.
I think that is a beautiful thought that when we become peaceful we help others to become peaceful. I can see how that is true since I have become at peace with my blindness and now want to help others become peaceful with their disability. Remember that I am here to help you! You will drive yourself crazy if you try to question why things happen. When you learn to let go your life will flow much more smoothly and peacefully. Remember to be true to yourself and always try to be positive when you speak. There are so many stereotypes about disabled people out there, and you need to remember that you may be the only disabled person someone ever encounters. Happiness is contagious, so feel free to spread it around!
Once you accept that you are disabled you can start to live your life again. I think I have mentioned before that when I first lost my sight I would let everyone make my decisions for me. Once I started making my own choices on what I wanted then I became happier and I certainly felt more peaceful inside. You can look happy on the outside, but you need to be true to yourself to be happy and at peace with yourself on the inside. This is what the quotes are saying that you need to be ready for good things to start coming your way when you are at peace with yourself.
Our quotes today say much of what I have been feeling. We all need to work towards peace and acceptance. We live in a wonderful country and we have the freedom that other countries do not have. If you do not like something you have the freedom to say it or walk away. When will people learn that violence is not the way to solve our differences? You don’t see the blind community fighting with the wheelchair community or the deaf community. We are separate but equal, do we disagree? Sure we do, but let’s work out our differences so all are welcome. I challenge you the next time you see someone that looks different to go up and say hello. Let me know how it goes.
There will probably be people from the shooting in Miami that become disabled. It is very important to be at peace with yourself. After becoming disabled this can be quite challenging however, if you realize that you are still the same at your core as you have always been it will be much easier for you to be at peace with who you now are.
So, are you at peace with who you are?
If not why not?
Peace is something we all seek,
When we lack it, we feel weak.
Since it’s rooted deep inside,
With our peace, we’re closely tied.
Peace is something you can’t buy,
You won’t catch it from the sky.
Something about it is truly sublime,
It does not follow distance nor time.
Peace is something we mutually share,
For it is just, and always fair.
When we find it, peace is sweet,
It shall make our life complete.
"With awareness there comes choice. And so you are able to say: "I allow this moment to be as it is". And then, suddenly, where before there was irritation, there is now a sense of aliveness and peace. And out of that comes right action."
"Forgiveness … is the finishing of old business that allows us to experience the present, free of contamination from the past."
I am listening to Oprah’s Belief while I am writing this and the episode that is on is talking about Muslims. I tell you this because I think it fits beautifully with today’s quotes and the views of Muslims in today’s world. I find it so very sad that a few can shed such a negative shadow on a religion as a whole. I am not sure why some extremist seem to want to go back in time and I really do not understand why think they think violence is the way to go. I wish there could be more peace and understanding in the world. Why can’t people see how similar we are and celebrate the similarities and not just look at our differences?
