“A bit of advice
Given to a young Native American
At the time of his initiation:
As you go the way of life,
You will see a great chasm. Jump.
It is not as wide as you think.”
“We force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight. And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to. But the miracle is in the unfolding of the wings. You may not know where you’re going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you.”
Being newly disabled can be very scary, I know from personal experience. The one thing I also know is that you have to spread your wings and take that first step into becomes a person with a disability. Acceptance is probably one of the most difficult actions you will take into disability, but the sooner you take the big step the sooner your wings will unravel and the sooner you will learn to fly.
