We have an amazing weekend of inclusive arts experiences coming up at Millersville University Friday, November 20 – Sunday, November 22, including workshops and a performance by the world-renowned physically-integrated AXIS DANCE COMPANY. Much of it FREE!!!
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20:
FREE FILM AND TALK WITH THE FILMMAKER
The weekend will start on the night of the Extraordinary Give at the Ware Center in downtown Lancaster at 6 p.m. with a screening of the documentary INVITATION TO DANCE. The filmmaker, leading disability activist Simi Linton, will be here along with dancers from AXIS to host a post-show talk-back.
SATURDAY, NOV. 21:
FREE INFORMAL CONVERSATIONS WITH SIMI LINTON
Simi, newly appointed by Mayor De Blasio to the New York City Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission, has also offered to meet informally with small groups of interested community members, faculty and/or students, to talk about disability and the arts on Friday afternoon at or around 3:00 p.m. and/or Saturday morning (Nov. 21) at or around 10:00 a.m. in locations that best suit you. FREE AXIS DANCE COMPANY WORKSHOPS
On Saturday, AXIS DANCE will be conducting two FREE workshops.
The first at 10:30 a.m. is exclusively for “Wounded Warriors” and other veterans.
The second is open to the public and will explore the process of creating physically integrated dance. This may be of special interest to dancers and choreographers, but anyone is invited – with or without disabilities. The workshop will be held from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the Student Memorial Center at Millersville University. Enrollment is limited to 40. SUNDAY, NOV. 22
PERFORMANCE BY AXIS DANCE CO. with PRE- & POST-SHOW EVENTS
Finally, on Sunday Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. the AXIS DANCE COMPANY will give a performance at the Winter Center at Millersville University. This will be a fully accessible performance including wheelchair seating, ASL interpretation, and audio-description, FREE to those who are Deaf or living with disabilities. The repertoire includes to go again by choreographer Joe Goode, a new work built on veterans’ stories that brings to light issues facing our nation’s vets and addresses their resilience following severe life changes.
The performance will be preceded at 1:15 by a FREE talk led by Dr. Thomas Neuville of Millersville University on disability and the arts. Following the performance there will be a FREE talk-back with the AXIS dancers.
