Defective?

Today I had to call to make an appointment. Now the place where I wanted to make an appointment generally does not make appointments in advance, but since I am legally blind they will make an exception for me since I have to make ride arrangements. Last week I called twice and left a message and no one returned my call. I was expecting to have my appointment today so I finally received a call back today, after leaving another message.

The woman on the other end of the line was apparently new and was hesitant to make an appointment. If that was the only thing I would not be writing this article. When she said they had other people in wheelchairs etc, with “Defects”. I was left speechless.

I now cannot get that word out of my head! I am blind, legally blind, handicap, but I am certainly not defective! This is one word that really offends me and I am easy going, at least I think, I am, at least to the words I am defined by.

Defective makes me think of a machine or a thing. You can buy things with defects in them; I did not buy my blindness.

I would love to know what you think about being called defective. Please post your thoughts and please share this with your friends.
